Author: Célia Almeida CostaWhen a student comes to his or her first lesson in order to start learning a new language, especially if it is English – a global language, they are seldom aware of the difficulties they will face. The process can be compared to the climbing of a steep mountain. There will be moments when the student will feel so dispirited that if the teacher doesn’t realise what is going on, the situation can lead to a breakdown and the student may give up the learning of a new language forever. It is at this moment that we teachers have to come to the student’s rescue to re-enthuse them by explaining how the new knowledge will bring great chances for their lives, thereby setting them on the path to great achievements. There comes a moment when we teachers should reflect on the effect of our work. We should teach for the sake of teaching and always encourage our students to go ahead and when their efforts come to fruition we leave the scene silently but the feeling of a real accomplishment is our great reward.
